Picard S3 ep 5 thoughts
Mar. 17th, 2023 08:57 am...well, it was actually great.
My roommate had a single outburst early on over how OOC it was for Picard to feel so betrayed by Ro. But by the time we got to the end, he was cool with it. Michelle Forbes' acting was great and it was a pleasure to see her again. The conflict between her and Picard was plausible and well-acted ... the Changeling conspiracy actually struck me as fun, interesting writing, and the continued teasing about Jack Crusher's mysterious tree hallucinations and possible violent behavior really had me 👀
For the minor characters: Shaw was funny, Worf was even funnier, and Riker had a moment of blessed competence when he immediately recognized Ro's Bajoran earring as a datachip.
Definitely the best episode so far, leagues ahead of Episode 1. It feels like a whole different TV show. My only two "complaints" aren't really complaints:
1) I wish Riker had hugged Picard instead of just putting a hand on his shoulder 😆 S1 E7 Nepenthe really spoiled me for Riker/Picard hugs.
2) While I liked the conflict between Picard and Ro, I would have liked it better if his first reaction were ... gentler. I think his happiness to see her back in Starfleet should have outweighed his sense of betrayal from 30 years ago.
And my roommate made a comment that filled me with longing for a world that doesn't exist:
"What if instead of a secret son with Beverly Crusher, Picard's emotional arc revolved around Ro? Like, what if, instead of having to rescue a son he's never met who happens to be a dangerous criminal and morally gray... he has to rescue Ro?"
Same conflict, same sense of duty, but more of a tangled network of emotions. Past betrayal, both of them hurt by the other. But then again, it raises the barrier for entry. A lot of people who just casually watched TNG in the 90s, occasionally skipping episodes, probably don't remember Ensign Ro at all.
....Then again, we're in SEASON THREE of a "30 years later" show called "Picard", so maybe the barrier of entry is high enough that we can start expecting viewers to know these things XD
