Fandom Year in Review

Your main fandom this year?
I'd have to go with either Star Trek TNG or Our Flag Means Death, which came in late in the year but gripped me strongly by the balls. I think my Garak obsession is also worth noting because I spent a good chunk of time in the summer watching Garak episodes, reading Garak books, and writing Garak fics.
Your favourite movie watched this year?
Casa Susanna, the documentary. I watched it at a queer showing this summer with a drag show and dance routine before the movie. I bawled.
Your favourite book read this year?
As Nature Made Him, about David Reimer and the botched experiment to raise him as a girl. I was obsessed with this case when I was a kid and reading about it as an adult was very satisfying.
Your favourite TV show of the year?
Cucumber by Russell T. Davies. Not that it's a new show... But I loved the sense of humor, the very flawed protagonists, and the nonstop gayness of it all. It was a huge influence on the Babylon stories that I wrote.
Your favourite video game of the year?
The only one I really played was Hollow Knight, and it was great! I still haven't won the second Hornet fight.
Your favourite song, album, or artist to listen to this year?
Goth music in general with a particular focus on Alien Sex Fiend, Nick Cave, and Bauhaus. But I have to confess that since October I've been playing the three songs that Con O'Neill sings in "Dancin' Thru the Dark" on repeat.
Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
Joining Ad Astra, reading more out-of-print fandom zines, buying Izzy/Ed sketch zines, finally reading "A Stitch in Time" and ... I think "Study in Scarlet Marquis," it's my new favorite officially published Holmes/Watson fic. I also think it was this year that I gave Lower Decks and Strange New Worlds a chance and discovered that I really liked both, especially Lower Decks!
Your biggest fandom disappointment?
ST: Picard comes to mind, but that's a lie, because I KNEW Picard would be bad! And I had tons of fun dissecting why, while still enjoying the old cast reunion and the new Riker/Troi scenes. In reality my biggest fandom disappointment was "Our Flag Means Death." I was a season-one Izzy fan who was blown away by the manna from heaven in Episodes 1-3 and then brutally disappointed by the quality drop at the end of the season ... which ofc ended with Izzy's death...
Also worth mentioning is the trash fire that was Ahsoka. I was highkey obsessed with Thrawn for YEARS, and if "Ahsoka" came out just one or two years earlier, it would have destroyed me for being so bad XD But luckily it came out just as my Thrawn obsession was waning, so it was just kind of exasperating. How does David Filoni keep getting jobs??
Your TV boyfriend of the year?
Con O'Neill for sure. I've been making my way through his filmography and found some brand-new favorites XD
Your TV girlfriend of the year?
Deanna Troi!
Your biggest squee moment of the year?
It's a three-way tie between the Worf/Riker/Troi hug in "Picard", Izzy's suicide attempt in OFMD Ep. 2, and the Donna/Doctor team-up in Doctor Who, with special emphasis on the Doctor having the hots for Isaac Newton and the hug between Ncuti Gatwa and David Tennant. I'm a sucker for angst and hurt/comfort and hugs.
Fandom resolutions for next year?
I feel like I've been easing out of fandom for this past year, so my resolution is ... nothing! I probably need to focus on school XD
Your biggest fannish anticipations for the new year?
The Gargoyles comics. I have all of the new run and Dark Ages to catch up on, AND a new spin-off series that starts in January, Gargoyles: Quest. I have my fingers crossed for more Xanatos, please!
