I wrote about 6,000 words yesterday and finished off my novella! It came out to a total of 21,555 words for 5 days of writing. I sent the whole thing to Sho, and then we both sat in silence twiddling our thumbs for a while ... Sho said they felt like we were two kids who had just built a magnificent sand castle, and now we were just staring at it with our hands on our hips.
So...what now? 😐
I looked briefly into publishing options. I couldn't really find anything that fits. It's not experimental, nonlinear, sci-fi or fantasy ... it's just a sad little slice-of-life story about two closeted men in show business. After a few hours I just said, "Man, I miss writing these two" and Sho said they miss reading about them, and suggested I just keep going, follow them to the end of their lives.
I'm not sure there's a story there! I like the sad ending I have right now. It stops in 2007, when Character A is 60 and Character B is 40. But maybe, just by rereading and expanding on the scenes I've already written, I can expand it a lot. There were TONS of moments where I thought, "OK, this is just a short story. It's gotta be less than 6K if I want to get it published. So I can just summarize this part." (or, after I decided to make it a novella, "It's just a novella, so we can gloss over this period...")
All of those are moments that could be expanded, and will actually be fun to read. I wish I could get more readers on this! Just because I want to write more, and Sho wants to read more, doesn't necessarily mean I should. For now I'm just highlighting parts that could use expansion and outlining potential scenes.
