Hornblower, Gargoyles, Cookies :D
May. 3rd, 2023 10:36 pmLast night my roommate and I stayed up late watching Jesus Camp -- at around 2 a.m. we impulsively decided to get breakfast at the all-night diner XD French toast for me, delicious. Felt like a king.
While reading "Making Faces, Playing God," I jotted down 4-5 story ideas, and yesterday I randomly selected one (the least interesting one, I thought) and started writing it. Well, three scenes in, I had 5,000 words. When I finally went to bed around 0400 I realized it was shaping up to be more of a novella, and if so, I should look into Horatio Hornblower and how it was filmed. The novella centers around actors on Age of Sail TV show, so a "making of" guide would be really helpful!
Found + read just that at work today. It's a nice, good-sized "how we did it" guide with lots of detail, and photos too! I added a ton to the outline and wrote another 1K after work with my headphones on. And I'm lucky now to have friends with long careers in TV who can fact-check it when I'm done, although I already know I'm stretching credulity on some parts (...the fact that "Hornblower" got the budget it did is mind-blowing... giving the same budget to a fictional TV show stretches the suspension of disbelief!)
Oh! And when I came home, my roommate had a box full of cookies from a local bakery to try -- snickerdoodle (delicious) and sugar (pretty sure they used the storebought cookie dough), and he had the vegan chocolate chip and birthday cake types.
Ahhh let's see. After that I read a little of "Biography of a Broken Hero". I finished "War is a Force That Gives Us Meaning" and typed up all my notes, so I'll post that tomorrow! Then I read a little coffee table book called "Doubly Gifted", about famous writers who were also talented artists. I'll post my favorite scans here in a bit.
(Oh, and I got the new Gargoyles issue too! I think the writing's hitting its stride. This one felt suitably complex and lengthy. I remember it took a while before I felt the SLG comics got into their groove too, so hopefully it's smoother sailing here on out.)
