Cleaning Day
Apr. 23rd, 2023 02:37 pmMy roommate and I stayed up till 3 am last night, just talking -- mostly about books. I just finished "Insane", a nonfiction book about the US prison system's treatment of the mentally ill, and started "Woman on the Edge of Time" by Marge Piercy, which has some similar themes, takes place in the early 70s, follows the life of an immigrant from Chihuahua living in El Barrio and getting sucked into the abusive mental health system of the time. With, you know, some sci-fi time travel dystopia/utopia elements.
My roommate, meanwhile, is reading a great book on Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln which makes for great conversation and easily segues into discussion on modern politics + whether or not America was really "built on slavery".
Today J+S came over, which was nice -- we were going to split up, with J and my roommate tackling the house cleaning, and me and S hitting up the laundromat to do a massive load of laundry. But S surprised us by bringing a weedwhacker, so... new plan! He and my roommate stayed home to handle the lawn and cleaning, and J and I actually ended up just going to her house to wash my laundry, since she has a washer and dryer of her own XD We also hit up Walmart and I got a new shirt for $5.
Last night as I was dozing off it occurred to me that I should just take "Float" (my Haikyuu fic) and publish it as an ebook. I've never liked the idea of doing this because most of my fics are better *as fics*. Like they rely heavily on knowledge of canon, orrrr the emotional heft of the story comes from some meta message about the canon. Or, like my TNG fics, they're so thoroughly tied to Star Trek franchise rules that no sci-fi publisher would accept them. But "Float" is different -- focusing on two side characters who were never fleshed out, featuring NO elements of the canon story, building original backstories and personalities for these two, with a complete arc that has nothing to do with the manga... OK, and also, it never got a response from the fandom, so it's a rare fic where I both think it's worth publishing AND no one is going to miss it when it's gone.
Over the next few days I'll work on editing it, beefing up the word count a little, filing off the serial numbers. I told my roommate and he likes the idea -- he's working on a cover for me right now.
