Actually, Shay is really good at explaining the context of the works and providing you with relevant quotes for each section. I think he wrote it knowing that a lot of veterans haven't read the Odyssey or Iliad and might need a lot of it explained to them first. When I read Achilles in Vietnam, I hadn't read the Iliad yet, but Shay gave me a good understanding of it, and then when I did finally read it, I was able to pay better attention than I normally would XD
